European Heritage Days 2022, planned on September 17 and 18, 2022, are an irresistible event for the History of France lovers. This year, cultural venues gather around the following theme: Heritage for all. It was all it took for the Palace of Versailles to unveil a playful and attractive program.
After a previous edition focusing on comics, the Palace of Versailles offers a new theme for the 39th European Heritage Days. On September 17 and 18, 2022, the Sun King's house switches to "Republican" mode with a special tour focusing on the Republic and the role of Versailles in housing several assemblies between 1789 and 1879.
For the weekend, discover the Salle du Congrès and the Salle du Jeu de Paume, two places that made the history of the growing Republic in France. First things first, in 1871, the Salle du Congrès housed the National Assembly that ran away from Paris, as well as the Commune's revolutionary government. Inaugurated in 1876, in the heart of the Midi Wing, it housed the Chamber of Deputies until 1879, then, during the 3rd and 4th Republic, the two chambers for the election of the President.
Today, it allows to gather deputies from the Assembly and Senators seating at the Congress for passing constitutional revisions, or when the President wishes to address both assemblies. For this exceptional weekend, visitors are invited to discover the Salle du Sceau as well as the National Assembly President's apartment.
Then, the Salle du Jeu de Paume - famous for its oath taught in history classes. For the record, on June 20, 1789, members of the third estates gathered to swore an oath: never to separate before they give France a constitution. A founding event of the French democracy painted by Jacques-Louis David on a large mural that unfortunately remains unfinished.
Please also note that during your tour, you can meet students from the Ecole du Louvre and ask them everything you need to learn more about these places where the Republic wrote History.
At the same time as the Musical Fountains Shows and the Night Fountains Shows - still charged - the estate welcomes you in the estate, from the Trianon to the King's Chamber. After the tour, you can enjoy the Horse-carriage gallery to discover the wonderful manège designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and the collection of carriages of the Palace of Versailles.
Let us enjoy the weekend at the Sun King's, friends, shall we?
