For Museums Night, the National Archives open for free the Hôtel de Soubise on Saturday May 18, 2019 in the evening. We can visit the archive storages, the lounges f the hotel, the rooms of the museum and take part many free activities all night long!
The National Archives take part in Museums Night on Saturday May 18, 2019. On the occasion, the Archives welcome us at the Hôtel de Soubise, a hotel particulier at the heart of the Chantier du Temple built in 1371.
On March 6, 1808, the Hôtel de Soubise is bought by the State with an imperial decree and officially given to the Empire Archives: Napoleon I had the archives gathered together since until then, they were kept in several Parisian storehouses.
On the menu of Museums Night 2019 at Paris National Archives:
- Free tour of the permanent visit of the museums and the lounges
In the rooms of the Hôtel de Soubise, we have hundreds of documents from public and private archives (sealed pieces, cards, maps, illuminations, photographs). The Edict of Nantes of Marie-Antoinette’s lasts letters, the greatest texts in France are kept there.
- Guided tours of the Grands Dépôts, every 30 minutes
Well-kept spaces at the Archives, the Grands Dépôts are open to small groups. In the wings extending the Hôtel de Soubise, a majestic library houses the most “precious” archives in Paris, the Medieval archives and ones from the Ancien Régime, dating back to before 1789, the “dépôts” of Louis-Philippe and Napoleon III are only open on rare events. We have in these spaces the Trésor des Chartres, all the titles related to land and diplomatic interests of the Crown.
- Following the Knights’ footsteps
Demonstration of the Action Collégiens project of the Mairie de Paris in the Cour d’Honneur.
- “Allons z’Archives!” – from 8:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. or from 10:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., in the Grands Dépôts
Ready to work out? Actor Jean-Marie Lehec offers “a health, participative and gym tour through the National Archives to unearth all together and surpervised by an uncommon guardian the breath of the great French Revolution that presided over their creation…” Free ticket to get at the reception area set in the Cour d’Honneur.
- Quiz – from 6 p.m. to midnight
The National Archives offer a quiz for adults and children over documents displayed in the museum. Many prizes to win!
Note that this Museums Night will be the occasion to discover for free Mobile/Immobile, the exhibition offering to explore the manifestations of mobility, now major in our lifestyles and to question the future.
