For Museums' Night 2024, the Musée Jean-Jacques Henner is opening its doors to us by night, for a free visit that we won't hesitate to take advantage of! See you on Saturday May 18 at this museum-workshop in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.

We're off to enjoy Nuit des Musées at the Musée Jean-Jacques Henner, this Saturday, May 18, 2024. A wonderful free evening awaits us from 6pm to 10pm, in the permanent collections and temporary exhibition of the moment at this museum in the 17th arrondissement of Paris.

A French painter of the 19th century, Jean-Jacques Henner left behind a large body of work. He is best known for his portraits and landscapes, painted during an extensive trip to Italy after winning the Prix de Rome. His female nudes and his unsettling realist style are particularly memorable.

The Musée Jean-Jacques Henner was once a private mansion and studio particularly popular with Parisian artists. This historic cocoon houses over 2,200 works recounting the life of this artist.

The program for this Nuit des Musées at the Musée Jean-Jacques Henner:

  • Free admission to the exhibition "Histoire(s) d'un musée. Centenary of the museum Act 2".
    Saturday, May 18, 6:00 p.m.

To celebrate its first hundred years open to the public, the museum is offering a new exhibition-dossier that traces the history of the institution and those who have contributed to it.
If this year, 2024, marks the centenary of the Olympic Games held in Paris, it is also appropriate to celebrate the centenary of the opening of the Henner museum. On March 7, 1924, Léon Bérard, Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts, inaugurated the Musée National Jean-Jacques Henner, almost 20 years after the Alsatian master's death.
The result of a donation by Marie Henner née Dujardin, the artist's niece by marriage, to the French state, the institution is modelled on the monographic museums founded at the turn of the century, the Moreau and Rodin museums.
One hundred years after the donation, in 2023, the museum honoured its founders: Jules Henner and his wife Marie, and the latter's sister Frédérique Dujardin. One hundred years after opening to the public, we would like to highlight the evolution of the institution during this century of existence and pay tribute to the men and women who have worked for its development and its scientific and cultural influence in the service of the public.

Margaux Laurens-Neel, presents her end-of-residency exhibition "Henner, le ruban, la braise" from May 15 to September 23 in the museum galleries.
The sixth artist to occupy the museum's artist studio, Margaux Laurens-Neel, born in Deauville in 1997, is a Franco-British painter, photographer and sculptor. She lives and works in Paris. She graduated from the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 2021, where she studied with comic book artist Joann Sfar, photographer Eric Poitevin and art historian François-René Martin. His career was punctuated by a stay at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and another in Berlin.
" Henner, le ruban, la braise" is the culmination of a work in dialogue with the work of Jean-Jacques Henner, conjuring up his two emblematic motifs: naiads and women in Alsatian costumes and headdresses. Crossing mythologies between the two painters, the emergence of ribbon-capped nymphs, it's also a question of reincarnating models from the past. To question what emerges under the triple nomination of artist-muse-model, between figures of the past and contemporary faces. In the footsteps of Jean-Jacques Henner's obsessive and desirous spirit.
Today, Margaux is accompanied by Galerie Droste, which recently offered her the opportunity to present her first solo show. Through a sensual dialogue between painting and ceramics, she explores the place and representation of women throughout the history of art and figuration, the modes of representation of the naked body, and the expression of feminine desire, through the use of a symbolic bestiary and the language of flowers, clothing, accessories and color...
