Paris musée des Arts Décoratifs hosts a major retrospective dedicated to Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. This all-rounder artist has always stood up for her freedom, to become an avant-garde figure. Costumes, accessories, photographs, perfume bottles, jewels, sculptures… Come and discover the creations of this limitless artist, from July 6, 2022 to January 22, 2023, with the “Shocking! Les mondes surréalistes d’Elsa Schiaparelli” exhibition.
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs staged 520 works, including 272 costumes and fashion accessories. The tour is enriched with paintings, sculptures, jewels, perfume bottles, ceramics, posters and photographs by the greatest names of her time, from Man Ray to Salvador Dali, from Jean Cocteau to Meret Oppenheim or even Elsa Triolet.
For 25 years, Elsa Schiaparelli had fun, creating always surprising and innovative collections and works, loyal to her personality. Fascinated by art, Schiaparelli was inspired by the greatest painters, sculptors and photographers, creating links between disciplines to create unique models.
Rejecting codes and standards, she made haute couture her playground, using varied styles such as gowns, casual outfits, athleisure, accessories and perfumes.
The exhibition shines a light on her remarkable and revolutionary collections, as well as her surprising collaborations through an immersive and spectacular staging. Discover hundreds of drawings and sketches made by the artist, returning on her awakening to fashion and haute couture.
Art Déco, Salvador Dali, Elsa Triolet, Jean Cocteau, Man Ray: all movements and artists of her time are inspiring for her and are inspired by her. She carries special attention to details, borrowing fun touches from the surrealistic movement. She lets her passion speak in her creations, inventing collections inspired by Italian antiquity, nature and music.
The Musée des Arts Décoratifs also surprises us by recreating in the tour Elsa Schiaparelli’s couture showrooms, that used to stand 21 place Vendôme in Paris. These showrooms saw parade all the world’s extravaganzas who called in the artist to stand out. And the highlight, one of Elsa Schiaparelli's latest creation, a gown worn by Lady Gaga during President Joe Biden's swearing-in ceremony, the singer lent to the museum for the exhibit.
The exhibition also features plenty of pictures showing the great friendships and professional collaborations that marked the artist’s career and life. The exhibition stimulates our senses with the display of perfumes she worked on.
And of course, we cannot tell you about this fashion icon without showing some of her most famous silhouettes. This rich, modern, bubbly and unexpected exhibition is like the designer. A wonderful tribute to discover as soon as possible!
