Even though Paris does not lack of fun outings, the rest of the regions also enjoy treasures worthy of the trip. Today, we offer you to come along by Val d’Oise to discover a very unique church in Île-de-France. Let us head to Haute-Isle.
This is where you will find the Church of the Annunciation, the only troglodyte church in Île-de-France. It means it has been carved into the very face of a chalk cliff. In other words, the Church of the Annunciation has been built within the chalk cliff, and the bell tower is the only part made of masonry. It makes us feel like it is piercing the verdant hill covering the church.
Listed as Historic Monument since 1926, this uncommon church originates back to the 17th century! Four windows carved into the rock light up the indoor where lays the vaulted nave covering 20m long, 20m wide and 8m high. Right next to the parish cemetery, this church devoted to the Virgin of the Annunciation unveils a raw façade. The chalk cliff the church has been carved into remained untouched and now provides this uncommon and exclusive landscape in the region!
