Covid: the number of patients in ICU starts to decrease

The number of patients in ICU has been slightly decreasing for the past three days. This is some very hopeful news, as contamination data keep breaking records.

The trend is changing, as there have been fewer patients in ICU for three days in a row. This Saturday January 15, in the evening, ICUs reported 3,852 Covid-19 sick, namely 130 fewer than on Wednesday. At the same time, 324,580 new cases have been recorded in France, but the number of patients hospitalized has not decreased.

The start of the decrease in patients in ICU could sound like good news since the hospitalization risk is reduced with Covid-19 Omicron variant. Therefore, people sick with the new variant do not tend to overcrowd ICUs, but keep pressuring hospitals. As a matter of fact, even if the disease is milder, some yet require hospitalization.

In Île-de-France, head of ICU at Lariboisière hospital Pr. Bruno Mégarbane told France Info “we’re starting to reach the resuscitation peak”. “The number of patients with severe Covid-19 no longer increases in Île-de-France”, the doctor says. There are more patients checking out ICUs than checking in, as Delta contaminations are decreasing. But he says it is still too soon to relax restrictions and each and everyone should stay “extremely cautious on an individual level”.
