European Heritage Days 2018 at the Invalides

For European Heritage Days 2018, the Musée de l’Armée opens its doors for free. On Saturday September 15 and Sunday September 16, 2018, guided tours, workshops and concerts expect you!

As it happens every year, European Heritage Days are the occasion to visit for free museums and buildings that are usually charged! It’s the case of the Invalides and the Musée de l’Armée who, like usual, offer an extremely rich program for adults and children!

European Heritage Days 2018 at the Musée de l’Armée – programming:

  • Discovering preservation
    Saturday at 2:30 p.m., Sunday at 3 p.m.

    Preserving the heritage, restoration techniques, current or finished operations. Themes addresses during a very special visit ends with a unique meeting with the restorers of the Museum’s studios (leather, metal, fabric) (registration at histoire@musee-armee.fr, meeting at the northern reception area)

  • Following the footsteps of a young WWI hero
    Saturday at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

    During this tour, we follow the exceptional route of this 22-year old young man from Saint-Cyr in the Marne battle in 1914, then in 1916 in Verdun finishing the war as a captain, the Legion of Honor, 7 wounds and 11 honorable mentions.   • Visiting the Historial Charles de Gaulle
    Sunday at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

    Completely interactive, the monument is subject to guided tours on European Heritage Days. Discover the how and why the décor of this special monument has been created, why choosing such a scenography, how medias are selected and presented to the public. The visit will also be the occasion to highlight some historical events presented in these areas. (25 persons per group. You can register at histoire@musee-armee.fr)
  • Playful visit of the Centenary of the Great War
    Saturday at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., Sunday at 4 p.m.

    We rediscover the Great War through the museum’s collection: emblematic items (helmets, 75 mm guns and even one of the famous Marne Taxis) rub shoulders with more intimate objects such as letter from the trenches, newspapers, etc. The tour ends with a presentation of the Renualt FT tank purchased in 1974 by the museum and recently restored via cryonics thanks to company Arquus patronship.   • Women and War (1914-1918)
    Saturday at 3 p.m., Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

    Follow the exceptional destinies of Marie Curie, Anna Morgan and even Louise de Bettignies who, thanks to their generosity, their abnegation and their sense of sharing, took part in the First World War. (registration via histoire@musee-armee.fr, meet at the northern reception area)

  • Crossed visits about the Marshal Foch
    At the Musée de l’Armée, Saturday at 11:30 a.m., Sunday at 11 a.m.

    The Hôtel de Noirmoutier, usually closed to the public, and the Musée de l’Armée join forces to present a visit focusing on Marshal Foch. The visit starts with his career at the Hôtel de Noirmoutier with the presentation of his office where he spent his last years. The visit continues in the Hôtel des Invalides. You will discover some of his belongings. (Meet at the northern reception area, mandatory registration on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 at the Hôtel de Noirmoutier, where a voucher is handed away and to be presented at the Musée de l’Armée.)
  • Visit of the restoration workshops
    Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

    Former refectory usually closed to the public, the Turenne room brings together the wall paintings of the 17th century illustrating Louis XIV military campaigns and the activities of metal, leather and fabric workshops. A privileged moment to talk with the museum’s restorers who will show the restored objects, or the ones being currently restored. Free access
  • Leather workshop for the young public
    Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m., 3:30 p.m., 4 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Duration: 30 minutes

    Come along with your family and discover the leather restoration techniques and get into action by practicing some tricks on a piece you can then take back home. Another approach of the story of this war through the leather work. (From 6 years old, registration at histoire@musee-armee.fr)
  • Pleasure of givingnon-stop

    We let ourselves be taken to a tour in the Museum areas devoted to the discovery of quirky or prestigious works that have been donated. Tokens of friendship or alliances between princes, collectors’ treasures given to the museum… Works purchased in often surprising circumstances and that belonged to unexpected celebrities. Free access.

  • Concert between War and Peace
    Saturday at 4 p.m., in the Grand Salon

    During this concert, François Pineau Benois performs Lucien Durosoir’s “Genève”, violinist and confident in the front lines. Lucien Durosoir, at the most tragic hours of the Great War, never gave up on music. On the menu: Duroisoir, Janáček, Debussy, Enesco, Bartok and even Sibelius. Under the aegis of and with the support of association Musiciens entre guerre et paix. Free access within the limits of seats available.
  • Left-Hand piano concert
    Sunday at 4 p.m., in the Grand Salon

    As a tribute to Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during the First World War and who then ordered many works for the left hand alone, Maxime Zecchini offers us a collection of ten volumes of the repertoire for left hand. On the menu: Debussy, Schulhoff, Bartok and even Ravel. Under the aegis of and with the support of the Mission du centenaire de la Première Guerre Mondiale.   • First Parisian book fair of the military history books: editors and historians meet to make you discover our military history through their works / Saturday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., open-air fair at the foot of the Dome.

  • Meeting with the Musée de l’Armée partners: the musée de l’Armée gives its partners pride of place! Learn more about the Directorate General for External Security, the board of heritages, remembrance and archives of the ministry of the Armed forces, the Audiovisual Production Company for the Department of Defense (ECPAD) and the Society of the Friends of the Musée de l’Armée by meeting them in the Turenne room?/Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in free access, in the Turenne room
