On February 24, 2022, Russia illegally invaded Ukraine, provoking a conflict that has lasted three years. Three days earlier, Moscow had already violated international law by unilaterally recognizing the independence of the separatist entities of the Donbass. By illuminating its emblematic monument, the Eiffel Tower, in Ukrainian colors this Monday, February 24, 2025, Paris reaffirms its support for the resistance of the Ukrainian people and the search for a just and lasting peace.
Since the start of the war, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have lost their lives or been wounded. According to Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine has suffered 46,000 army casualties and 380,000 wounded, while tens of thousands of civilians have also perished. At the same time, the war has created the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the Second World War, with 6.8 million Ukrainians forced into exile, including more than 100,000 welcomed in France, mainly in the Île-de-France and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions.
Over the past three years, Anne Hidalgo, Mayor of Paris, has visited Ukraine five times to demonstrate the solidarity of the French capital. She has witnessed the massive destruction caused by Russian bombardment of the country's vital infrastructure. "For the past three years, the Ukrainian people have shown admirable courage in the face of the Russian invasion. By illuminating the Eiffel Tower, Paris affirms its support for Ukraine and for freedom", said a statement from the city published on Monday morning.
Symbols aside, Paris is providing concrete support to the Ukraine in the form of humanitarian and logistical aid. The French capital has sent emergency supplies, including generators and rescue vehicles, and set up reception programs for refugees. Fund-raising events and collections of essential goods are regularly organized in partnership with associations.
On this day of commemoration, Paris wishes to reiterate its unwavering solidarity with Ukraine. The city stands by the Ukrainian people and will continue to affirm its commitment to peace and freedom in Europe.
