This former residence of the renowned Franco-Japanese painter Tsugouharu Foujita offers a captivating journey through time, immersing visitors in the vibrant spirit of the 1960s. The house and studio, beautifully preserved, are sure to delight all curious minds.
Unchanged since the death of the painter fifty years ago, the Foujita house and studio has become a place of remembrance and a pilgrimage site for enthusiasts of the Paris School. Arriving in Paris in 1913, the eccentric artist moved to Montparnasse. There, a fellow artist introduced him to Picasso, dismissing him as a side show, but Picasso quickly recognized Foujita’s talent and took him under his wing. After nearly two decades in Paris, Foujita decided to journey elsewhere, first heading to Latin America and then returning to Japan in 1933.

Foujita returned to Paris in 1950. He initially settled in Montparnasse, his beloved neighborhood, then in 1960, he purchased a small house in Villiers-le-Bâcle in Essonne to enjoy an artistic retirement with his wife, maintaining a cozy studio there. This house-studio became the artist's final residence, remaining untouched after his passing. The Essonne department offers activities to bring the spirit of this dandy of the Roaring Twenties back to life during the Night of Museums event.
