UNESCO, the United Nations organization dedicated to education, science, and culture, has been taking part in the Night of Museums for several years now—a special evening dedicated to making art accessible to everyone.
The first European Night of Museums took place in 2005. Since then, every spring, this event invites art lovers and curious visitors alike to explore numerous museums across France for free, from sunset until midnight. What's on offer? Nighttime guided tours, exclusive itineraries, film screenings, and a variety of engaging activities— all set in a friendly, lively atmosphere that makes discovering art an enjoyable experience for everyone.
In 2023, UNESCO is once again taking part in the European Night of Museums, happening on Saturday, May 13th. Located in the stylish 7th arrondissement of Paris, the UNESCO headquarters is a modern architectural gem. Several iconic 20th-century architects, including Bernard Zehrfuss, Marcel Breuer, and Pier Luigi Nervi, contributed to defining its renowned design. The site also houses a collection of notable artworks by Miró, Picasso, Giacometti, Calder, and others — boasting over 600 pieces of art in total!
For this Museum Night 2023, UNESCO is shining a spotlight on Africa’s rich cultural heritage. During open visits, visitors will have the chance to explore a special temporary exhibition of African artworks drawn from UNESCO’s impressive collection.
