The Nuit des Musées 2026 offers a unique opportunity to discover free of charge the sublime museum of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), housed on its historic site in Paris’s 2nd arrondissement. This Saturday, May 23, 2026, you’ll be able to explore the architecturally significant spaces and admire heritage treasures, while taking advantage of the exceptional opening of the Oval Room, a grand public reading hall.

In the heart of Paris's 2nd arrondissement, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, site Richelieu, stands as a monument to knowledge and history. This emblematic site, which has been open to the public since its renovation was completed in 2021, invites us to explore not only its priceless collection of documents, but also its little-known museum, which tells the story of the library and its treasures.

The BNF Richelieu, just a stone's throw from the Palais Royal, is an architectural masterpiece housing historic reading rooms, exhibition galleries and the Cabinet des Médailles museum. The latter offers a fascinating dive into the history of France and its writings, presenting rare items such as medieval manuscripts, incunabula and precious documents that have survived the centuries.

The museum, often considered a hidden treasure within the BNF Richelieu, is distinguished by its unique collection of coins, medals and antiquities. Among the most remarkable pieces is the Trésor de Berthouville, a spectacular collection of silver objects dedicated to the cult of Mercury, discovered in Normandy in 1830.   À l’occasion de la Nuit des musées, la BnF propose au public de découvrir gratuitement son musée, niché au cœur de son site historique dans le 2e arrondissement de Paris. Une invitation à explorer des espaces architecturaux classés, à contempler des trésors patrimoniaux et à flâner librement dans la salle Ovale, qui abrite notamment la plus importante collection de bandes dessinées en France.

  Accompagnés de conservateurs et de chargés de collections des différents départements de la BnF, les visiteurs peuvent admirer des œuvres emblématiques issues de collections constituées au fil des siècles par de grandes figures de l’histoire de France : le trône de Dagobert, l’échiquier de Charlemagne, les médailles d’or commandées par Louis XIV, les décors peints par Boucher et Natoire, parmi bien d’autres trésors, ainsi que l’exposition « Chypre à la BnF », présentée à l’occasion de la présidence chypriote du Conseil de l’Union européenne.

  L’Institut national d’histoire de l’art s’associe lui aussi, pour la première fois, à la manifestation. Sa bibliothèque, conçue par l’architecte Henri Labrouste, se découvre exceptionnellement en nocturne, en accès libre ou lors de visites guidées assurées par des étudiantes et étudiants en archéologie, histoire de l’art et patrimoine. Le parcours met en lumière la richesse artistique et décorative de la salle de lecture : peintures ornementales, médaillons rehaussés à la feuille d’or, caryatides monumentales, bustes d’artistes, ainsi que le volume de l’œuvre contemporaine Substrat de Dove Allouche.
