At the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire Paul Éluard in Saint-Denis, a number of events are being organized to mark Nuit des Musées, a nocturne open to all this Saturday, May 18, 2024.

The Nuit des musées is an exceptional cultural event, giving the general public the chance to discover the collections of the many museums in the Île-de-France region in a different light, with a surprising nocturnal atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy current exhibitions, often free of charge, discover works of art, take advantage of exceptional and varied activities for all ages, and learn more about the behind-the-scenes aspects of museums.

The Musée d'Art et d'Histoire de Saint-Denis is also a great place to discover the Ile-de-France region, and in particular Seine-Saint-Denis. Dedicated to local art and history, the museum features an archaeological collection of 600 objects, including the remains of a Merovingian necropolis and objects from daily life in the Middle Ages (food, music, games...), as well as a Paul Eluard collection, made up of gifts from the poet to his native town.

    What are the secrets behind the animals and characters in the museum's paintings? Each detail hides stories, sometimes funny, sometimes frightening, that a mediator tells to those who want to learn while dreaming. The visit ends with a hands-on art workshop.

  • Guided tour - Museum highlights
    Saturday May 18, 4:30 pm, 6:00 pm

    Come and (re)discover the works in the museum, nestled in a 17th-century convent with preserved architecture! From the medieval history of Saint-Denis to the poet Paul Eluard, via the siege and the Paris Commune of 1870-1871, this tour unveils rich and unsuspected collections.



  • Guided tour - The history of Saint-Denis
    Saturday, May 18, 5:30 p.m.

    Travel through time and space to identify and understand the phases of transformation of the Dionysian territory! The archaeology collection evokes the site's origins, with the legend of Saint Denis, the formation of the Carolingian town, its evolution, the creation of the cemetery of kings, the 19th century and the radical changes linked to industrialization.



  • Sentences, proverbs and punchlines: a poetic tour of the museum
    Saturday, May 18, 6:30 p.m.

    Welcome to a "museum of words", under the auspices of Eluard, poet of love, commitment and play! Linguist Julien Barret offers a poetic stroll on the theme of the short form, from the Roman Empire to the punchlines of NTM. Comparing Dadas and Surrealist proverbs with sentences written on the Carmelite walls, visitors are invited to play with words.



  • Guided tour - Discovering the siege and the Commune of Paris
    Saturday, May 18, 7:00 pm

    Are you unfamiliar with the history of the 1870-1871 siege and Commune of Paris? Then this tour is for you! With the help of paintings, sculptures and documents, you'll learn about the main events, as well as the leading figures of this uprising, such as Louise Michel.



  • Guided tour - The Paul Eluard collections
    Saturday, May 18, 7:30 p.m.

    The diverse collection devoted to the life and artistic networks of the Saint-Denis-born poet includes autograph manuscripts, first editions, drawings, photographs and sculptures. Come and admire Eluard's works, including the famous manuscript of the poem "Liberté", and those of his contemporaries and friends such as Man Ray, Pablo Picasso, Dora Maar, Lee Miller and Brassaï.
