Fellow music lovers, join us on Friday, June 21, 2024 for another Fête de la musique! Every year, this popular, festive and free event is an opportunity to celebrate livemusic through concerts given by musicians, both amateur and professional! For a whole day and evening, groups and artists take to the streets, of course, but also bars and restaurants, concert halls and theaters, not forgetting museums and monuments, to make music resonate in more unusual places.
This year is no exception. And once again, there are plenty of musical events to look forward to in Paris, including at the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Judaïsme. Heir to the collections of the Musée d'Art Juif de la rue des Saules, the Musée d'art et d'histoire du Jud aïsme (mahJ) has been housed since its opening in 1998 in the Hôtel de Saint-Aignan, a sumptuous private mansion nestling in the Marais district of Paris.
On Friday June 21, 2024, for this latest edition of the Fête de la Musique, the cour d'honneur of this Parisian museum welcomes the Yaïa quartet. Comprising Leila Mendez (vocals and percussion), Michel Taïeb (guitar, percussion, vocals), Michel Schick (clarinets, saxophones, vocals), Jean Laurent Cayzac (double bass, electric bass, vocals) and Khalid Kouhen (percussion, vocals), the group aims to take spectators on a journey with its Judeo-Spanish repertoire from the Levant.
Since 2013, the Yaïa quartet has been exploring the Judeo-Spanish repertoire of the Levant, taking its bark to the shores of the Maghreb, where it encounters the vanished legends of Judeo-Arab music.
Exploring the Judeo-Spanish repertoire of the Levant since 2013, the Yaïa quartet sets sail for the shores of the Maghreb, in search of the lost legends of Judeo-Arab music. The group makes its own the compositions, mythical or forgotten, that bear witness to a time when North African Jews spoke, dreamed and sang in Arabic. The generous backing vocals of Michel Taïeb's electric guitar, Jean-Laurent Cayzac's double bass and Michel Schick's baritone are led by Leïla Mendez's light, Fado-like voice, embracing the nomadic languages of the Jewish Mediterranean. A music of the heart, sometimes tragic, sometimes festive, where love has pride of place.
