Simplicity doesn't have to mean simplistic, and with Aftersun, director Charlotte Wells proves it! Acclaimed at festivals the world over(Cannes, Munich, Deauville, Melbourne and many others, where it caused a sensation), the film arrives in cinemas on February 1, 2023.
It's a lovely drama about filiation. Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio play a young single father and his daughter on vacation at a club abroad. During this interlude, the two get to know each other better. She, mature enough for her age, and he, who became a father far too young and not yet responsible enough. It's a relationship full of sweetness and unspoken words that the director depicts in this initiation story, in which it's the young girl, now an adult, who rediscovers these almost buried memories.
The importance of memories, and their transience, is a strong theme running through the film. In hindsight, perhaps this sweetness was illusory, and for the young woman, rediscovering these memories calls into question all her certainties about the father she didn't know well enough. A beautiful film to discover.
