Simplicity does not necessarily mean simplistic, and with Aftersun, director Charlotte Wells proves it! Adored in festivals around the world(Cannes, Munich, Deauville, Melbourne and many others, where it caused a sensation), the film arrives in theaters on February 1, 2023.
This is a very nice drama about filiation. Paul Mescal and Frankie Corio play a young single father and his daughter, on vacation in a club abroad. During this interlude, both will get to know each other better. She, mature enough for her age, and he, who became a father much too young and not yet responsible enough. It is a relationship full of softness and unspoken words that is depicted by the director in this story of initiation where it is the young girl, now an adult, who rediscovers these almost buried memories.
The importance of memory and its transience is a strong theme that runs through the film. In retrospect, this sweetness was perhaps illusory and for the young woman, rediscovering these memories calls into question all her certainties about this father she did not know well enough. A very beautiful film to discover.
