Originally released in 2006, "The Host", directed by Bong Joon-Ho ("Parasite") returns to theaters in an exceptional 4K remaster on March 8. 17 years later, it's still worth it?

Although Bong Joon-Ho 's global and mainstream fame came with Parasite, the Korean was already a filmmaker to watch back in 2006 when The Host, a monster movie with a chilling and horrific atmosphere, was released. In 2023, a 4K remaster of the film is expected to hit theaters on March 8, 2023.

Also note that on the occasion of the re-release of the film, Bong Joon-Ho will be in Paris, on February 26, to present the film and give a masterclass, at the Grand Rex. But then, what to think of the film? If you've already seen it, it will be a good opportunity to rediscover it in ideal conditions, but this re-release is mainly for neophytes.

The Host tells the story of Park Gang-du, a kindly simpleton played by Song Kang-Ho(Best Actor Award at the last Cannes Film Festival), who lives with his daughter Hyun-seo and her father. One day, a giant monster emerges from the depths of the river where they live and attacks the crowd. Gang-du tries to escape with his daughter, but she is abducted by the monster, which disappears at the bottom of the river. The Park family decides to go in search of the creature, to find Hyun-seo...

If you liked Parasite, or any of Bong Joon-Ho's movies, you will definitely like this opus. If the design of the creature and the special effects that animate it have aged a lot, for a Korean film of 2006, it remains a very good work. Above all, the director was only at his third feature film, but his immense talent was already there. Thanks to his relentless, ultra-rhythmic, always readable and impressive direction, we easily forgive the special effects and we manage without any problem to enter this story as terrifying as upsetting.

The tension is palpable at every moment, and even the most accustomed moviegoer will be held in suspense from beginning to end. After the fantastic opening scene of the monster's attack, the rhythm of the film changes, and other themes arise. The arrival of a supposed virus would have been caused by the monster and the whole city of Seoul is quarantined. This is the opportunity for Bong Joon-Ho to deal with a theme dear to his filmography and present in all his works: the struggle between classes, and the banishment of proletarians. Here again, the message is unfailing.
