Traveling the abyss, underworld dog Rainer recounts the six lives of Conann, perpetually put to death by her own future, across eras, myths and ages. From her childhood, enslaved by Sanja and his barbarian horde, to her rise to the heights of cruelty at the gates of our world.
With Conann - due in cinemas on November 29 - Bertrand Mandico reinvents the myth of Conann the Barbarian. He appropriates and feminizes it with a unique style. The author of Garçons Sauvages and After Blue is a brilliant visual artist, and his film is visually prodigious. A true artistic performance, where men are played by women and vice versa, and the dogs are anthropomorphic. Mandico is having the time of his life, adopting the aesthetic of the giallo and turning every shot into a painting that belongs in a museum.
Conann is surrounded by an immense vintage charm, with its demented practical effects, the film is a virtual slap in the face, sometimes in color (sublime, with its pastel hue), sometimes in black and white. And even though the script may appear to be a pretext for the visual experimentation that the filmmaker so cherishes, we remain captivated from start to finish.
It's a unique, multi-format project. It's pure, radical and fascinating art. A true niche film, Conann is sure to please all fans of weirdness and experimental cinema.
