Cinema: this box-office record had not been beaten since 2001

For the first time since 2001, there are no sequels in the top three box-office hits of the year. A record that says a lot about the Hollywood industry.

Barbie, Oppenheimer and Super Mario Bros. These three films are the three biggest hits of the year worldwide, and they all have one thing in common: they are not sequels to any other film. This hasn't happened since 2001! For almost 22 years, every year there was at least one sequel in the top three most popular films of the year. 2023 is not yet over, and that may yet change, but these three films are unlikely to be dethroned. In 2001, the first Harry Potter film, Lord of the Rings and Monsters & Co. topped the box-office charts worldwide. These three films would go on to spawn several sequels and spin-offs.

In a Hollywood industry that relies solely on sequels, reboots and other spin-offs to keep audiences interested, it's encouraging to see that such films can find their audience, even if neither Barbie, Oppenheimer nor Super Mario Bros are original projects. All three are adaptations, one of a toy, the second of a biography, and the third of a video game.
