French cinemas welcome the release of the biopic Iron Claw, scheduled for January 24. Directed by the talented Sean Durkin (winner of the Prix Regard Jeune at the 64th Cannes Film Festival for his film "Martha Marcy May Marlene"), this film plunges us into the world of professional wrestling in the 80s. Starring Zac Efron, Harris Dickinson, Jeremy Allen White and Lily James, Iron Claw tells the true story of the Von Erich brothers, emblematic figures of the sport.
Trained by an authoritarian and tyrannical father, a former wrestling star who never achieved his goals. The film explores their meteoric rise and the challenges they faced, both in the ring and in their personal lives. Sean Durkin 's direction highlights not only the triumphs but also the tragedies that punctuated the lives of these brothers, who became wrestling legends.
The film is staged in the style of a Greek tragedy, with each of the brothers facing a difficult destiny. The lives of the Von Erich brothers are little-known in France, but they are fascinating. In telling their story, Sean Durkin recounts the American dream and its false promises. Hope, often lost. It might be easy to make fun of these big babies, unable to live without each other, with everything in their muscles and not much in their heads, but the filmmaker takes the opposite view. He wants to show how these brothers are crushed by the system they tried to hack, while having become, in spite of everything, the biggest family in the history of wrestling.
With its vintage, colorful photography, Iron Claw stands out from the current cinematic landscape and proves once again that A24 projects are among the most interesting in American cinema. Sean Durkin tells an exceptional story and offers one of the first major roles of Zac Efron's career, whose character stands in stark contrast to those he's used to playing.
