The duo of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland return with 28 Years Later, the third installment in the saga that began in 2002 with 28 Days Later. This new opus plunges once again into a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by an epidemic, where infected humans become rabid. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer and Ralph Fiennes star in a story focused on a young boy trying to save his mother in a desperate world.
This trailer highlights the dark, tense atmosphere of this new episode, reviving the spirit of the original film while introducing a new generation of characters.
28 ans plus tard will be available for purchase on VOD from October 16, 2025, then for digital rental from October 22, 2025.
Synopsis: For the past 28 years, Britain has been living under the yoke of a terrible epidemic that infects people and turns them into rabid humans. A few groups of uninfected people remain. The story centers on a young boy looking for a doctor to help his dying mother. What will become of humanity?
On an island cut off from the rest of the world, connected to the mainland by a single road accessible at low tide, lives a community of survivors locked in total confinement for 28 years. Twelve-year-old Spike accompanies his father(Aaron Taylor-Johnson) on his first outing, a virile rite of passage to confront the zombies. But on the way, the boy discovers smoke on the horizon and learns of the existence of a surviving doctor.
When his mother(Jodie Comer) falls seriously ill, Spike decides on his own to take him to meet this mysterious doctor, played by Ralph Fiennes, in a multi-day odyssey marked by fear, loneliness and enigmatic encounters. The child becomes the real emotional heart of the story, driven by the need to believe in something in the midst of collapse.
The narrative is punctuated bysymbolic images, brief and disorganized scenes, sometimes confusing: historical visions, stylized shots, fragments of nightmares. But it's an encounter with a Swedish soldier that reveals the reality of the outside world: Britain has remained frozen, in quarantine, while the rest of the world has continued to evolve. Phones, plastic surgery, freedom of movement... Spike is naively discovering all these things. "I have a friend whose lips look the same when she eats seafood," he says innocently in front of a photo of a botoxed woman.
This glaring cultural gap underlines the film's thesis: the real virus may not be biological, but societal and ideological, fed by fear, withdrawal and oblivion. A contemporary reflection on the divide between societies in crisis and those that continue to move forward, whatever the cost.
With the help of cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, Danny Boyle delivers a film of undeniable formal beauty: apocalyptic landscapes, immersive framing, cold, contrasting light, all combine to create a strange, suspended atmosphere. The soundtrack by Young Fathers is a master stroke: a blend of organic textures, primitive percussion and muffled vocal fragments, it gives the film a disquieting, visceral sonic identity.
The film relies on powerful performances. Alfie Williams, the film's revelation, plays Spike with a rare intensity: mute, fragile, yet determined. Jodie Comer, as the ailing mother, moves us with her restraint, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson, just named "the world's most handsome man of 2025" by science, imposes a tough, damaged father figure. He shatters the codes of masculinity, embodying a man who is at once protective, overwhelmed and shaken.
But it's Ralph Fiennes who shines as the enigmatic doctor: cold, ambiguous, almost messianic, he embodies the loss of moral bearings in a world where survival becomes an exercise in interpretation.
This new opus will appeal more to fans of auteur cinema and contemplative post-apocalyptic tales than to fans of classic horror. If you're looking for gore and horror, 28 Years Later won't scare or startle you. It's aimed at an audience curious about unconventional narrative forms, visual experimentation andpolitical allegories. On the other hand, viewers attached to the saga's original universe are likely to remain frustrated by the lack of concrete answers, continuity or clear evolution of the lore.
