Superman, directed by James Gunn, marks the return of the most famous superhero to the big screen. Starring David Corenswet (Hollywood) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), the film explores a unique balance between action, emotion, and science fiction. Distributed by Warner Bros., it was released in France on July 9, 2025, and will be available to purchase on VOD on November 6, then to rent digitally on November 19, 2025.
In this new take on the DC icon, Clark Kent must reconcile his Kryptonian origins with his human life. Facing Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), he embodies hope in a world in crisis more than ever before. Directed by the filmmaker behind Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, this new episode opens a central chapter in the DC Universe.
Synopsis: Clark Kent tries to maintain the balance between his dual identity and his human values in a world where truth and justice are being tested more than ever.
Alongside David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, the cast includes Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi. The music is by John Murphy. The film adopts a bright and humanistic tone, far from the dark realism of previous adaptations. James Gunn reaffirms his desire for accessible and emotional superhero cinema.
Our review of Superman:
After the particularly successful The Suicide Squad, which reversed the curse of DC superhero feature films that don't always live up to expectations, James Gunn persists and signs off with a Superman adaptation that is grandiose in every way. Starting with its solid and dynamic narrative. The director pulls out all the stops for the action sequences and allows himself breaks for the emotional moments, all of which form a clever mix that is as subtle as it is daring. There are a few narrative issues (very few, in fact), but they are quickly forgotten.
The film has absolutely everything you could want to see in a Superman movie: the Fortress of Solitude, the Daily Planet and its crack team, a flamboyant Metropolis, enemies galore... Everything blends together perfectly to create a film that is quite close to the comics in its approach to the character and his adventures. In addition to being well-paced, it's as funny as can be, with subtle touches... And that's also what makes the film so strong: unlike Taika Waititi, who forced in heavy-handed, loud humor in Thor: Ragnarok, James Gunn is much more subtle in his approach to humor here, sprinkling it in here and there, much like he did in Guardians of the Galaxy... And it's all the more enjoyable because it's so masterful.
The film also avoids the pitfall of origin stories: here, there are no ships crashing to Earth, no learning of powers... The hero is not born, he is already there, well established in his role. It's a surprising approach, but it's particularly well done from the outset. In terms of casting, David Corenswet plays an absolutely perfect Superman, ultra-fresh and modern, and the duo he forms with Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) works perfectly. A Lois Lane who could not have been closer to the one in the comics, but also to the various series and films, with the actress playing the character in a surgical manner. Everything we wanted to see. Nicholas Hoult is masterful in the role of Lex Luthor, as theatrical as can be. As for the Justice Gang, we love the irreverent side of Guy, played by Nathan Fillion, and we also appreciate the development of Mister Terrific, who has a strong presence on screen.
Another good point is the character's modern yet retro feel (particularly his costume), which is consistent throughout. It's refreshing while still anchoring the character in something familiar. This film has never been more relevant, combining global conflicts reminiscent of the wars currently raging around the world (we don't need to spell it out for you...) with the power of journalism and information. Superman is a character who breaks the mold, and that feels good. The film is also extremely respectful of the source material, whether it be the comics, various series, or previous films. This is evident in the music, the inspiration for the film as a whole, and the various cameos and other references, which are always subtle (hello Michael Rosenbaum, we saw you...).
A beautiful love letter to Superman and films of this genre, for a complete cinematic experience. Superman is THE film about the hero we've been waiting for from DC for a long time... Go see it!
