American director Charlie Polinger will present his first feature film, The Plague, in the Un Certain Regard section of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. This selection marks Polinger's debut on the Cannes scene, following several acclaimed projects on the independent festival circuit. The cast includes Joel Edgerton, Everett Blunck and Elliott Heffernan.
As a reminder, the Un Certain Regard selection is a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival that showcases bold, formally "different" films. In addition to competing for the prizes awarded by the UCR jury, The Plague is also in the running for the Caméra d'Or 2025, awarded to one of the first films in the selection for this 78th edition of the festival, across all categories.
"ThePlague evokes the sometimes difficult relationships between children at school. Or, in this case, in a water polo team, around what looks like this harassment and violence that needs to be corrected from the earliest age," explained Thierry Frémaux at the Cannes press conference.
The Plague will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The release date in French cinemas is not yet known.
Synopsis: An awkward teenager endures the ruthless hierarchy of a water polo camp.
