Far from the spotlight of the official competition, Critics' Week and the Quinzaine des Cinéastes, Acid is forging its own path on the Croisette. For more than three decades, this association of filmmakers has defended a free, daring and independent cinema.
For the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the Association du Cinéma Indépendant pour sa Diffusion has just unveiled a selection of 9 feature-length films, often first and second works that have yet to find a distributor in France. An essential showcase for a cinema on the bangs, but terribly alive.
Among the French premieres, festival-goers will have the chance to discover Sylvain George's new documentary 'Nuit Obscure - Ain't I a Child? The French director is known for his avant-garde, eminently political films.
Acid's biography of the director: "A filmmaker with post-graduate degrees in philosophy, law and political science, as well as in cinema (Université Paris I, Université Paris IX, EHESS), since 2006 he has been making poetic, political and experimental films focusing in particular on the themes of immigration and social movements. His work is shown at major festivals, institutions and avant-garde venues around the world (Locarno Film Festival, Viennale, IFFR Rotterdam, Jeonju Film Festival, Centre Pompidou, Pacific Film Archive, Anthology Film Archive...), where it regularly wins awards (FIPRESCI Prize, Best Films...). In 2012, he was guest filmmaker at the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar in New York State. He teaches at the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po) and regularly leads masterclasses and workshops around the world (FEMIS, Punto de Vista, Instituto Politécnico de Tomar, École Normale Supérieure de Lyon, Lima Independiente Film Festival, Filmmaker Film Festival/Milano Film Festival)."
Nuit Obscure - Ain't I a Child? will be unveiled at the Cannes Film Festival 2025. The release date in French cinemas is not yet known.
Synopsis: Nuit Obscure follows the journey of young exiles through the nights of Paris. Between furtive gestures and vibrant presences, it sketches out youth as a power of being, and brings to light, in silence and duration, other ways of inhabiting the world.
