A masked ball by Giuseppe Verdi at the Bastille Opera: live broadcast at the cinema

This winter, opera makes its way into cinemas. Sunday, February 8, 2026, over 160 cinemas across France will broadcast live "A Masked Ball" by Giuseppe Verdi. Performed from January 27 to February 26, 2026, at Paris’s Opéra Bastille, this Italian masterwork is directed by Gilbert Deflo and features star performers such as Anna Netrebko (Amelia), Ludovic Tézier (Renato), and Matthew Polenzani (Riccardo) on stage.

It’s worth noting that the opera "Un bal masqué" is based on a true historical event: the assassination of Swedish King Gustav III at a masked ball in 1792. However, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera focuses on the doomed love affair between Riccardo, the governor of Boston, and Amelia, the wife of his best friend. In this fresh production directed by Gilbert Deflo, the setting is updated to the Lincoln era while keeping the American context intact.
