But Dorante, a young lawyer without a fortune, is secretly in love with her and, with the help of his accomplice Dubois, sets up a subtle manipulation to win her love. Far from being a simple comedy of manners, the play sheds light on class relations and power games in 18th-century society.

Already familiar with the playwright of the Enlightenment, Alain Françon staged La Double Inconstance in the 1980s and La Seconde Surprise de l'amour in 2019. With Les Fausses Confidences, he has opted for a non-academic approach, focusing on the feelings of the characters rather than on their psychology. He highlights the power of Marivaudian language, where desire and freedom take precedence over reason. The whole is supported by an exceptional cast, including Gilles Privat, Georgia Scalliet, Pierre-François Garel and Dominique Valadié.
