L'Assemblée des femmes returns to the Paris stage in a new adaptation by the Le Roi des Fous company. Inspired by Aristophanes' comedy, this version focuses on the mechanisms of power and highlights the political, social, and family excesses that permeate contemporary society. From November 18 to 22, 2025, the Théâtre de l'Opprimé will host this landmark cultural event, which is very much in tune with current trends in the performing arts, as the presentation dossier points out.
Adapted by Alicia Robledo and directed by Emilie Chevrillon, the play opens in Athens in crisis, where women, tired of being excluded from political life, devise a stratagem to seize power. Disguised as men, they infiltrate the Assembly and succeed in passing a law that overturns the established order. The staging uses masks and disguises to highlight the absurdity of social roles and amplify the burlesque dimension inherited from ancient theater. According to the artistic intentions presented, this approach allows human contradictions to be pushed to their peak while opening up contemporary reflection, making this adaptation one of the most notable projects of 2025.
The stage design is based on a modular structure of stepladders evoking the hemicycle of the Assembly. It allows the relationships of domination and shifts in power throughout the story to be visually materialized. The staging also incorporates a diverse musical repertoire ranging from reworked popular songs to original compositions, creating a bridge between ancient Greece and the contemporary world. The use of masks, designed by Alicia Robledo and Eólide Rojo Campos, reinforces the theatrical and grotesque dimension and facilitates the transformations necessary for the multiplicity of characters, in a setting representative of theater in Paris.
The cast includes Olivia Algazi, François Brunet, Emilie Chevrillon, Paul Sebastian Mauch, Eólide Rojo Campos, and the vocal participation of Luis Guerrero. The lighting design is by Maurici Macian-Colet, while the sets and props are designed by Eólide Rojo Campos. The artistic team is faithful to the spirit of the Le Roi des Fous theater company, which is based on the pursuit of a demanding form of theater that combines satire, commitment, and aesthetics inherited from popular traditions. The show can be seen at the Théâtre de l’Opprimé on November 18 and 22, 2025.
