Artists play with our senses: discover the art of trompe-l'œil, with the Musée Marmottan-Monet's playful and unusual exhibition, on view from October 17, 2024 to March 2, 2025.

When you think about it, art is a bit like magic... A stroke of the pen, a bit of paint, and landscapes come to life on paper. Such an activity can't be entirely normal! And the Musée Marmottan-Monet won't contradict us: the Parisian art house is staging an unusual and playful exhibition on trompe-l'œil, from 1520 to the present day. Numerous paintings from museums all over Europe are brought together in this original exhibition, on view from October 17, 2024 to March 2, 2025.

Louis Léopold Boilly, Cornelis Norbert Gysbrechts, Laurent Dabos... Paul Marmottan was seduced and astounded by the art of trompe-l'œil: the collector bought several paintings from different periods. The Musée Marmottan-Monet highlights this playful and surprising side of the collector. Through this exhibition, the museum pays tribute to its founder, while at the same time allowing us to discover the richness of this art form.

That's right: trompe-l'œil is not only fun, it's an art! In order to deceive the viewer's gaze, the artist must demonstrate unfailing precision and technique. More than 70 works, dating from the 16th to the 21st centuries, play with our senses, blurring the boundaries between illusion and reality.

This exhibition showcases the different forms of trompe-l'œil, from portraits to vanitas, decorations, political creations and modern and contemporary formats, in a journey full of surprises...

A must-see exhibition at the Musée Marmottan-Monet, to discover the secrets of trompe-l'œil artists!
