The Château de Chantilly, 40km from Paris, is a real gem to discover. Magnificent domain left in its state of 1871, Chantilly is composed of a big Renaissance style Castle, vast gardens of different styles, 2 museums (the one of Condé of the Horse) and a stable always in activity.
The Domaine de Chantilly is the work ofHenri d'Orléans, the Duke of Aumale. Thanks to his precautions in his will, Chantilly remains today (a century later), a jewel box of preserved wealth. Indeed, as a great collector and without an heir, he bequeathed his property to the Institut de France under the condition that upon his death, the Musée Condé would be open to the public.
This is why today, the castle has kept its decoration and its period furniture. You will discover the only princely apartments of the July monarchy entirely preserved in France. Recently restored, do not miss to discover them within the castle.
It also has the second largest collection of ancient paintings after the Louvre and a prestigious collection of books including the famous "Très Riches heures du Duc de Berry".
The Condé Museum is the legacy of the Duc d'Aumale: a great art lover, he decided to install his collection of paintings and art objects in the Château de Chantilly. Galleries of paintings were set up to house his exceptional collections. He has assembled the second largest collection of ancient paintings in France, after the Louvre Museum. There are more than 830 paintings, 2,500 drawings, 2,500 prints, 1,700 old photographs and about 250 sculptures. Among other treasures to discover: Nicolas Poussin's Massacre of the Innocents, Philippe de Champaigne's Portrait of Cardinal de Richelieu, Raphael's Madonna of the House of Orleans, but also Giotto, Fra Angelico, Botticelli, Titian, Poussin, Van Dyck, Watteau.
The Grandes Ecuries of the Chateau de Chantilly offer equestrian shows throughout the year.
They also house the famous Museum of the Horse, opened in 2014, a modern museum that shows nearly 200 works of art around the horse and its history. Fun and interactive, the Museum is suitable for all ages.
As for the park and gardens, there is plenty to discover and enjoy on long walks. Imagine 115 hectares of French gardens including the parterre Le Nôtre but also English and even Anglo-Chinese gardens. Playgrounds, labyrinths but also kangaroos are to be discovered in the enclosure of the domain of the castle. We advise you to take a ride in a cart to discover the domain or a pedal boat ride for an exotic visit with a sublime view of the castle and the exceptional expanse of its ponds.
