Considered the City of Love, Paris boasts a particularly romantic and charming district, Montmartre, where couples love to go to drop off a padlock, admire the scenery or stroll through the typical streets. Right next to the Abbesses metro station is the Mur des Je t'aime, a must-see for tourists and lovers on the move. Did you know that "Je t'aime" is written on it in 250 languages?
This wall, designed by Frédéric Baron, symbolizes a link, a place of reconciliation, in the heart of Square Jehan Rictus. Its creator wanted to render the principle of the wall turned towards peace, usually an allegory of borders and individualism. In this way, the wall pays tribute toLove in all its forms and, above all, in all languages, making it universal. And what better way to do this than by engraving it, like teenagers writing their initials in the bark of a tree?
Between 1992 and 2000, Frédéric Baron went in search of all the "I love you's" in the world, collecting them from neighbors and embassies. He then asked Claire Kito, working alongside Daniel Boulogne, to assemble the writings to form the mix we know today, on a 40m2 surface and 612 glazed lava tiles. Among the languages represented are those of the 192 UN member states, as well as Basque, Bambara, Catalan, Corsican, Kurdish, Navajo, Occitan, Yiddish and many others.
