The Christofle store set a stone’s throw from the Concorde is a den for crystal and gems lovers; in addition to the store displaying the Maison’s novelties, private lounges of the rue Royal allow to have a break and start a reflection about tailor-made creations.
Still today, Christofle is an institution in the goldsmithery world with beautiful creations between contemporary creations and traditional silverware. Through the “Héritage & Modernité” [Legacy & Modernity] exhibition aiming at opening the Maison Christofle thanks to a real tour mixing iconic pieces from yesteryear, today and undoubtedly tomorrow already, in the heart of an incredible 18th century decorum.
But the store is not historic. Yes, you have to know that the opening of the first Christofle store took place at 12 rue Royale in 1897 and it’s only in 1990 that the store changed its location to move across at 9 rue Royale. If the story of the place has been lost with this moving, with this change the store is set within Hôtel Le Tellier, a series of “new Maisons” wearing numbers 9, 11 & 13 built in 1785 by Jacques-Ange Gabriel.
Hotel decorations were supplied by carpenter Antoine Maréchal and sculptor Louis Fixon junior who realized whole the wainscoting sculptures. With luck, the 9 rue Royale is the only one to have kept its original decors “in situ”. European Heritage Days will also be the opportunity to discover the façade, the stairs and the splendid wrought iron handrail and the decors in the lounges listed as historic monuments.
