Starting from Tuesday March 15, the Eiffel Tower will increase by several meters thanks to the installation – visible to passersby – of a new radio antenna. It will peak then at 330 meters (or 1,082.68 feet) high.

The Eiffel Tower currently measures 324 meters (or 1,062.99 feet), and has been since the 2000’s when the antenna was added. But starting from Tuesday March 15, 2022, this Frenchy symbol is to grow up by a few extra meters, six to be precise, to peak at 330 meters tall. How is that even possible? A new radio antenna will seat at the top.

Built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Paris World Fair, the Eiffel Tower is a tower made of puddled iron. Initially called “Tour de 300 mètres” (300-meter Tower) with its original 312 meters (1,023.62 feet), the Tower grew up about 20 meters (65.61 feet) in over a century, only because of the antennas used to transmit radio and television in France. For forty years, the tower has been the tallest in the world, before being defeated by many and more recent constructions.

In the coming days, Parisians and tourists will be able to admire the new antenna at the top of the Eiffel Tower. It will even be possible to attend this change of dimension from the outside as the process will be completed by helicopter. This new digital radio diffusion system will enable to use a wider spectrum, and a better compatibility with the DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcast) network. In 2005, the extension with an antenna enabled to set up a transmitter giving access to digital TV.
