Highlight of this White Night 2019: the beltway will be closed to cars and turned into a bicycle lane for the night, from Saturday October 5 to Sunday 6, 2019. The crazy announcement has been made by Paris Mayors and promises to be an unforgettable experience for bike riders and pedestrians.

When we tell you that the White Night 2019 will be crazy, it’s no lie! Paris City Hall will close the beltway to cars (at least, most of the road) to welcome pedestrians and bike riders, in addition to an art parade in the streets of Paris from 7 p.m. and the 10k night race in museums and monuments in Paris.

Yes, brace yourself because you’ll be walking the beltway between Porte de Montreuil and Porte d’Aubervilliers this Saturday October 5, 2019. Over 1.7k (out of the 40k of the beltway) will be turned into a lit velodrome open to bike riders (and pedestrians) from the Porte de la Villette and the Porte de Pantin!

With the support of creative studio 1024 architecture, the beltway will be lit with the pace of Parisians bikes. By registration, you can light up your bike (or your Vélib’) thanks to light kits given at Porte de Pantin (by online registration) and ride this temporary velodrome for 2 hours. A merry and public event like what Paris wants to offer for the Olympics 2024. Curious people can even walk the beltway thanks to the secured pedestrian lane all along the road, to see Paris from a new light.

Bike riders are invited to come on Saturday October 5, 2019 from 2 p.m. at the Village Vélo, Place de la Fontaine aux Lions, to enjoy a self-repair, BICYCODE location workshop, to find your lost or stolen bike. The village will also raise awareness about the road safety and children can also learn how to bike in partnership with the Fédération Française des Usagers de la Bicyclette [French Bicycle Users Federation].

This event, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has unveiled she dreamed about it during the day a WWII bomb has been dismantled in February 2019. She said to the Chief of Police “if we can close the beltway to dismantle a bomb, we can close it for the White Night”. This night will be the occasion for the Mairie de Paris to talk about the future of the urban highway: in May 2019, she declared she wanted to add plants to the beltway to make it a shared road but reasonably not before 2050.
