For Nuit des Musées 2024, the Musée Bourdelle invites the curious to discover the work of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle during an exceptional nocturne this Saturday, May 18, 2024.

La Nuit des Musées is the European event that allows us to visit the most beautiful museums and monuments in our own backyard, during an exceptional, and often free, nocturne! Hundreds of cultural venues invite you to discover their treasures, and offer a variety of activities to brighten up your visit.

Luckily, the Musée Bourdelle is taking part in this 20th edition of the Nuit des Musées, this Saturday, May 18, 2024. The museum, which houses the former workshops of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, is unveiling its program and treasures. The collection is exceptional: hundreds of Bourdelle's works are on display in the artist's studio, giving visitors a unique insight into his creative process.

Antoine Bourdelle is known as one of the most talented and influential sculptors of his time, with a remarkable artistic career that spanned almost six decades. A master of monumental sculpture, he produced works that are now icons of the city of Paris, such as the famous "La France" on the Pont Alexandre III.

On the program for Nuit des Musées 2024 at the Musée Bourdelle:

  • Bourdelle. The memory of objects
    Saturday, May 18, 6:00 p.m.

    Bourdelle. La mémoire des Objets

The exhibition "Bourdelle. The Memory of Objects" - displayed in the Portzamparc Wing - offers an unprecedented immersion into the art and life of sculptor Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929), through a dialogue between his works and the personal objects that inspired them. This plunge into the rich collections of the Musée Bourdelle offers a new look at his art, through the medium of emotion, intimacy and narrative...

In 2020, the old building of the Musée Bourdelle had to be moved prior to restoration. On this occasion, a large number of objects belonging to Antoine Bourdelle, who lived and worked here for most of his life, were found.
Why were these objects carefully preserved by Bourdelle, then his descendants, and bequeathed to the museum? What do they tell us about the artist's studio life, his origins, his tastes and, of course, his work?
What we know about them today is the result of a long process of investigation, cross-referencing photographs, archives, Bourdelle's texts and the press of the time... The interest of these often modest objects lies in what they tell us about the artist's life and work. Souvenirs, even relics, their display contributes to the sacralization of the great man. The objects, most of which have never been exhibited before, are the main thread running through the exhibition: through their evocative power, they provide keys to understanding Bourdelle's work and art.
