From November 19, 2019 to March 15, 2020 the Versailles Revival exhibition at the Palace of Versailles returns on a specific period of time of the life at the palace. In the late 19th century, the Palace of Versailles was the topic for many paintings, books, photographs. And yet, it’s also a criticized period since the palace is now a historic museum. Let’s return on this period of tensions at the Palace of Versailles.

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the Palace of Versailles causes artists, writers and even painters a true feeling of enthusiasm, nostalgia, curiosity and passion whether it's for painters, writers or even artists.

It’s at that time for instance that the historicist painting booms, and that Versailles becomes the model for many paintings. It’s also in the early 19th century that the Versailles model (furniture, decorative arts, art, architecture) starts to inspire Europe again.

Yet in 1837, the Palace of Versailles is transformed into a historic museum by Louis-Philippe and this decision isn’t approved by many executives at the Castle who hope to give it its former splendor back.

It’s the beginning of a long work that still carried on today, by looking one by one the long-lost items and decors to make the palace look as if it has never been emptied.

On one side the history of the palace resurrection, on the other hand, a surprising moment in the history of art when Versailles is part of the main schemes, with irreal visions from symbolist painters and the dashing gardens as painted by postimpressionists.

A very interesting exhibition to learn more about the most famous palace in France!

Please note that it's been over 4 years since our last visit, so the place and experience may have changed.
