The Maison de Victor Hugo was to reopen in November 2020, after undergoing a makeover for over a year. On the occasion, the museum was to take us to a journey to Victor Hugo’s universe and tell us more about an unknown trait of the artists. Called “Victor Hugo Dessins: dans l’intimité du génie” [Victor Hugo Drawings: in the intimacy of the genius], the exhibition highlights his drawing skills. You are expected in the famous writer’s house from June 10 to November 21, 2021 to discover the extent of his talent.
The “Dans l’intimité du génie” exhibition shows landscapes, cartoons, and caricatures showing the character of their drawer: Victor Hugo was a man committee into politics and an artist able to come up with superb and oneiric worlds. This is the occasion for us to discover the writer’s inner life in order to better understand this major man in the French culture.
Victor Hugo the writer, this is obvious. Victor Hugo the drawer, this is more unexpected. The artist actually never shared his pictorial works with the general public. He preferred showing his drawings to his family and friends, when he did not want to keep them to himself. The Maison de Victor Hugo unveils the writer’s graphic work and presents a very rich and varied collection.
Works displayed represent different periods of time of the artist’s life and show big moments in his life – and especially meaningful people he shared his life with. His friends, his son-in-law, his daughter Léopoldine, his grand-children, his beloved mistress Juliette Drouet… Victor Hugo was inspired by the people he loved to create drawings of a remarkable fineness and beauty.
We can even discover many paintings and drawings made by his friends or companions, inspired by Hugo’s literary works.
The exhibition is all the more so interesting that Hugo’s drawings are fragile. The self-taught artist’ drawings easily crumble, making them even rarer. Go and discover the exhibition at the Maison de Victor Hugo to keep a timeless memory of the writer’s many talents.
