The RER D is the longest line in the Île-de-France regional express network, with a route spanning some 190 kilometers. Inaugurated in 1987, the RER D has 59 stops throughout theÎle-de-France region and beyond. In the north, the line starts at Creil in the Oise department, then crosses the Val-d'Oise with towns such as Goussainville, then the north of Seine-Saint-Denis with a stop at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis. It continues through the heart of Paris before heading south through Val-de-Marne andEssonne, finally reaching Melun and Malesherbes in Seine-et-Marne.

On its Paris section, the RER D offers three stops, two of which serve the capital's major stations: Gare du Nord and Gare de Lyon. The third stop is at Châtelet, in the heart of Paris. With this trio of Paris stops, RER D can nevertheless offer a good number of connections: it crosses lines 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 11 and 14 of the Paris metro, as well as RER lines A, B and E.
