Indeed, July 14 in France symbolizes the French Revolution, the end of absolute monarchy and the beginning of a more egalitarian, more democratic society. Traditionally, on this date every year, the whole of France gathers in its communes to dance, admire the fireworks and share a moment together.
And Ris-Orangis is no exception: this commune on the banks of the Seine can even claim to be more republican than most! In 1790, Ris-Orangis (still just a wine-growing village) was the first French commune to elect a mayor.
