On July 14, 1789, revolutionaries stormed the Bastille prison, bringing down one of the symbols of royal power. This date now commemorates the beginning of the republic and democracy in France, and is celebrated every year throughout the country. Military parades, firemen's balls, torch-lit retreats, fireworks displays and lantern-lit strolls: there are a few must-see events that take place every year on this date.
