Let's be honest, the Galeries Lafayette Christmas window displays in Paris's 9th arrondissement are a must-see during the holiday season in Paris. This year, the department store on Boulevard Haussmann has entrusted the keys to its festive world to Jeanne Detallante, a talented illustrator who has worked with Carven, Prada, and Miu Miu. Here's what's in store: lavish window displays, a spectacular 16-meter Christmas tree under the dome, and even a rooftop ice rink. Needless to say, we can't wait. See you there from November 12 to December 31.
The artist delved into the store's archives to imagine a Christmas story that pays tribute to the decorative arts and heritage of the Galeries. And frankly, the concept is great: we find ourselves in Santa's magical workshop, surrounded by busy elves and fantastical creatures preparing the most beautiful gifts. His characters will invade the store's windows, as well as its gift wrap and bags. Handy for bringing a little bit of that magic home with you.
As it does every year, the department store held a grand opening ceremony on Wednesday,November 12. This year, Clara Luciani was the guest of honor and kicked off the festivities with a magical showcase.
The Christmas window displays will be transformed into living tableaux, each telling a piece of the story. You'll discover Santa's office, an aesthete's version that ponders every detail, a large printer running at full speed to print wrapping paper, and the famous banquet with its striking red moiré patterns. This is Jeanne Detallante's favorite window display, and we can see why.
Elves are busy preparing and distributing gifts, while a baby elephant and a duck in boots wander through these ultra-colorful displays. The illustrator herself says that, for her, the Galeries Lafayette window displays were already an adventure when she was a kid. The lights, Paris at night, the excitement of coming to admire these magical decorations every year. And now, she's the one creating them. We think it's pretty beautiful.
Under the unmissable Coupole, a listed historical monument, the giant Christmas tree will make its grand return. And this year, it's no joke: 16 meters high, 560 kg of ribbons wrapped around it like the most beautiful of gifts, 8 km of LED garlands to make it all sparkle, and no less than 300 kg of fabric. The figures are a little dizzying, we admit. The whole thing will be decorated with illustrations by Jeanne Detallante, in keeping with the theme. And as usual, it's free to come and admire it, so don't miss out.
Galeries Lafayette is back with its rooftop ice rink. And honestly, it's agreatexperience to have during the holidays in Paris. Imagine: you're there, skates on your feet, gliding peacefully with a view of the Parisian rooftops, the illuminated Eiffel Tower, and all the Christmas decorations shining in the night. Thrills guaranteed. Stay tuned for more information coming soon.
The department store's heritage staircase will be transformed into a veritable art gallery during the holiday season. Visitors will be able to explore an exhibition showcasing the historical archives of Galeries Lafayette and the preparatory drawings of Jeanne Detallante. The artist delved deep into the store's archives, from the 1920s to the present day, to find inspiration. She says she was completely blown away to see all these different eras coexisting, between the bags, gift wrap, and packaging. The idea of modernizing all this was absolutely mind-boggling, she says. We can't wait to see the result.
If you want to bring a little bit of this world home with you, good news: Jeanne Detallante's universe is available on a wide range of products from October 18 to January 6. On the third floor of the Coupole store, you'll find the Christmas sweater with Santa Claus for $69 and collectible patches for $12. On the sixth floor, Christmas decorations start at $6.90. Perfect for treating yourself or as a gift.
In short, Galeries Lafayette is preparing another amazing Christmas for us this year. Between the window displays that take us back to our childhood, the monumental Christmas tree, the ice rink with a view, and all those little collectibles, we already want to go and see it. If you're looking for a great way to get into the holiday spirit and rediscover your inner child, this is definitely the place to go. This Parisian tradition that lights up Boulevard Haussmann is something we never tire of admiring year after year.
