As Christmas is coming, a new mutation of the virus has been reported in the United Kingdom, worrying Europe. Thus, many state members have decided to put their people back into lockdown. In France, the health situation keeps on deteriorating. The executive is likely to follow their European neighbors and announce harsher lockdown measures, if need be. So far, as government spokesman says at the end of the health Defense Council, “the virus keeps on spreading in France but much slower than in some countries” in Europe.

Will France be placed into lockdown again for Christmas? So are wondering the French and the executive, a few days before Christmas Eve. The health situation has been deteriorating in France, but also in the United-Kingdom where a mutation of SARS-CoV-2 has been reported last week.

Therefore, England, Wales, Germany, Italy and Austria have halted exchanges with Albion. Furthermore, they have all decided to instate stricter restrictions for the Holidays. The only isolated case in Europe: France that continues to report a growing daily Covid-19 case toll (+12,799 in 24h as of Sunday December 20). The incidence rate has exceeded 200 (for 100,000 inhabitants) in some departments, Santé Publique France says.

So far, the government seems to have ruled out a harsher curfew or the reinstatement of restrictions to fight against the epidemic. This issue was to be addressed by the Scientific Committee that gathered this Sunday evening to talk about the evolution of the health situation. In theory, the authorities will be issued a memo.

This is exactly what government spokesman Gabriel Attal says on France 3 at the end of the extraordinary Health Defense Council gathered this Monday by the executive. “Our neighbors are making choices we have made several weeks ago” he says before affirming that “the virus keeps on spreading in France but much slower than in some countries”.

According to epidemiologist professor at the Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines university Mahmoud Zureik reached by Le Monde, “the current balance is extremely fragile, we know we are playing along with the Holidays starting, as we have reached a high level where everything can collapse very quickly” the specialist explains.

This Monday December 21, 2020 during the Ministerial Council held in video-conference, President Macron reminded the importance of being careful with this new threat: the mutation of Covid-19 found in the United-Kingdom these past couple of days.
