For budding historians, there's nothing like a visit to the sublime and inescapable Bibliothèque Mazarine in Paris's 6th arrondissement. Little known to Parisians, this incredible library is open and accessible to the public all year round. Visit the Quai de Conti on Saturday September 20 and Sunday September 21, 2025, from 9am to 6pm, for a free tour of France's oldest public library.
Nestled on the edge of the Latin Quarter, opposite the Louvre, the Bibliothèque Mazarine is now part of the Palais de l'Institut de France , and is one of the richest libraries in France. Originally the personal library of Cardinal Mazarin, it was opened to the public in 1643.
A true Parisian jewel, it is useful for all researchers looking for a quiet place to work or recharge their batteries, surrounded by millions of books that are part of history. A study and research library specializing in historical disciplines, the Mazarine Library has never ceased to develop since its creation.
