Heritage Days 2026 at the National Archives Center of the Church of France in Issy-les-Moulineaux

  • Exhibition on the Prisoners of War Return Pilgrimage (Lourdes, 1946)

Eight decades ago, tens of thousands of prisoners of war returned from the stalags and Oflags for a grand pilgrimage to Lourdes. It became known as the Pilgrimage of the Return. The event was organized by Father Jean Rodhain, founder of the General Chaplaincy for Prisoners of War, whose mission was to provide spiritual support to the inmates. It was during this pilgrimage that Secours Catholique was born.

This unprecedented exhibition will be staged, exceptionally, on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. The 29 panels trace in image the work of this prisoners’ chaplaincy and the Return Pilgrimage. They will be complemented by archival items on display in the vitrines.

Finally, as every year, issues of the newspapers Cœurs vaillants and des Âmes vaillantes will be on show and available for consultation.

At Le Chemin des Vignes, the first vines (Chardonnay and Pinot Beurot) were planted in 1989, and the first harvest took place in 1992. Traditionally, the harvest is entrusted to CM2 pupils. Vineyard maintenance is carried out by the members of the Confrérie de Saint-Vincent.
