At Victor Hugo's Literary Home
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days 2025, the Maison Littéraire de Victor Hugo invites you to discover the exhibition "Victor Hugo and Les Misérables, from reality to the ideal".
Victor Hugo's major work, Les Misérables presents a wide-ranging exploration of moral misery and material poverty through characters known to all. The author bears witness to the difficulties of the society of his time, which touched him deeply. His humanist ideals shed light on a sometimes gloomy reality, while conveying the hope of a better world. Through this novel, Hugo makes a commitment to human rights - those of children, women and men. But his "ideal" is also reflected in his political and civic commitment.
The exhibition sheds new light on Hugo's well-known literary work and his humanist commitment, with precious items from the collection of the Maison Littéraire de Victor Hugo, enhanced by loans from the Maison Victor Hugo in Paris, the Bibliothèque Nationale de France and the Bibliothèque du Sénat.
The Maison Littéraire de Victor Hugo is located in the Château des Roches, formerly the property of Bertin l'aîné, director of the Journal des Débats in the 19th century. Here he hosted a literary salon, whose most illustrious guest was Victor Hugo. He created an 11-hectare English-style park on the banks of the Bièvre, planting numerous species that are now twice a century old: oaks, pines, plane trees, cedars, redwoods and bald cypresses. A pond and island add to its romantic charm.
Free parking. Tea room.
