Once again this year, several museums, hospitals and medical institutions are taking part in the Journées du Patrimoine, including the Musée de Moulages, nestled in the Hôpital Saint-Louis, and the Musée de l'AP-HP in the 94 district of Paris.
Located in Kremlin-Bicêtre, Val-de-Marne, the Musée de l'AP-HP, Assistance Publique des Hôpitaux de Paris, opened its doors in 1934. Today, it enjoys " Musée de France " status. It is also under the dual supervision of the Assistance Publique - Hôpitaux de Paris and the Ministry of Culture. Steeped in history, 13,000 works and objects, representative of hospital life from the Middle Ages to the present day, form part of this fascinating museum's collections, some of which are on view to visitors.
Come and discover them, as well as enjoy a range of events, on September 20 and 21, 2025 for the new, 40th edition of the Journées du Patrimoine (registration required).
The exhibition À pleines dents! From tooth puller to expert dentist, presents 160 works and scientific objects tracing the history of dentistry from Antiquity to the present day.
From the Middle Ages onwards, the rudimentary care practiced in public by charlatan operators has had a lasting impact on the collective imagination. While this depiction reduces dental professionals to mere tooth pullers, it masks a very different historical reality: that of a discipline that innovated in many fields, such as pain management. In many respects, the 18th century was a pivotal period for the dental profession, with the appearance of treatises, reflection on training and the creation of professional statutes.
The aim of this exhibition is to revisit this caricatured and reductive vision of the dentist, and to highlight the milestones and decisive innovations of oral medicine, which had long remained on the bangs of medical care.
Visit the Bicêtre Hospital (AP-HP), with its Grand Reservoir, 18th-century well and massacre courtyard. On this tour, you'll learn all about the history of this institution, which was once a welfare center, a state prison and an asylum. The tour ends at the Museum, which is currently presenting the exhibition "À pleines dents!
