To theeast of Paris, in the department of 94, the Hôpitaux de Saint-Maurice is a grouping of two establishments, theHôpital National de Saint-Maurice and theEPS Esquirol. The site has since become Hôpitaux Paris-Est Val de Marne. Both buildings are steeped in history.
EPS Esquirol is a former psychiatric asylum, listed as a historical monument, whose origins date back to the 17th century. It was rebuilt in the 19th century in a neoclassical style, under the direction of Jean-Étienne Esquirol, from whom it takes its name. TheHôpital National de Saint-Maurice was originally theAsile Impérial de Vincennes. Inaugurated in 1857, its purpose was to accommodate convalescent workers coming out of hospital care, at a time when Prefect Haussmann was undertaking the gigantic urbanization works that transformed Paris.
During the Journées du Patrimoine 2025, the general public will have the opportunity to conquer this historic site through a program specially designed for the occasion. As a reminder, this cultural event is a not-to-be-missed fixture on the Île-de-France calendar: over the course of a weekend, visitors can enjoy a wide range of visits, events and exceptional openings throughout the region. The next edition is scheduled for the weekend of September 19 to 21, 2025.
