Among the events not to be missed in the Yvelines, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, a city of royal charm perched high above the Seine. As you wander through its narrow streets, push open the doors of its Hôtel de Ville, a historic building to be (re)discovered during the European Heritage Days. Probably built in the second half of the XVIᵉ century, this remarkable edifice has seen some of history's great names pass through its doors. From 1604 to 1763, it belonged to the de La Rochefoucauld family. In 1673, Madame de Sévigné stayed here with François de La Rochefoucauld, author of the famous Maximes. In 1777, Charles-Antoine Jombert, a bookseller and printer, bought the house, which was entirely rebuilt in two separate parts.
Bought by the town in 1842, the former aristocratic residence officially became the town hall. Between 1883 and 1897, the building was transformed by municipal architect Henri Choret and decorator Louis Hista, who designed the elegant stucco of the wedding hall.
