Let yourself be swept up by the color and the brushwork of the great masters for European Heritage Days! They invite you to step through doors you’ve never seen before, such as in Chambourcy, in the Yvelines, where the André Derain House-Museum opens its studio and reveals the flamboyant treasures of Fauvism and the 20th century.

Imagine a weekend when stone and canvas come to life... On 20 September 2026, the European Heritage Days invite you to dive into a world where history is as much to be contemplated as to be lived. Free and open to all, this European event opens the doors to remarkable sites — sometimes off-limits — for two days rich in discoveries.

Iconic museums, historic townhouses, emblematic institutions or unusual places reveal themselves in a new light, inviting your senses to wander like a painter’s palette across a blank canvas.

And right on cue, a fauve unleashed in full freedom in the Yvelines (78) is on the program for this Sunday! If you’re passing through Chambourcy, seize the opportunity to visit the André Derain House Museum. Purchased by the town in 2014 and listed as a historic monument since 1986, this townhouse, once known as La Roseraie, has been restored to reclaim the atmosphere where the master of Fauvism lived and worked between 1935 and 1954.

Surrounded by a circle of blazing friends—Picasso, Braque, Giacometti—Derain left behind more than canvases: a living space where creation and contemplation meet. Inside, his studio still breathes with the energy of his pigments, while his collections of books from around the world invite you to travel, and the redesigned spaces echo the great figures of 20th-century art. Outside, the park extends the visit.
