On 19 and 20 September 2026, take advantage of the special rates offered for European Heritage Days to visit the Living Museum of the Railway in Longueville (77), where steam locomotives and vintage rolling stock bring more than 150 years of railway history to life.

Climb aboard history and leave your usual itineraries on the quay! The Journées Européennes du Patrimoine return on September 19 and 20, 2026 to offer a one-of-a-kind escape to the heart of history. Free and open to all, this European event opens the doors to sites that are sometimes off-limits to the public, from iconic museums to unusual venues, for two days of discovery where curiosity and wonder travel first class. Among the most inspiring stops in Paris and Île-de-France, the Living Railway Museum in Longueville, in Seine-et-Marne (77), reveals its exceptional railway heritage at preferential rates. Founded in 1968 by the Association of Young People for the Maintenance and Conservation of Trains of Yesteryear (AJECTA), this museum is the second-largest train museum in France in terms of historical rolling stock. Without the volunteers from AJECTA, the roundhouse would have been torn down and the steam locomotives sent to scrap.

Today a national monument, it houses about ten steam locomotives, seven of which are protected, as well as rolling stock that is meticulously cared for. For more than 50 years, these enthusiasts have been salvaging, restoring, and pampering every wagon and locomotive, tracing the evolution of the French railway since 1866. Among the museum’s treasures are France’s oldest signal box, a baggage wagon from the Orient Express, and a dining car from the legendary Blue Train, where meals can still be enjoyed on rare occasions.
