Housed on the site of the former Alfortville gasworks, now occupied by facilities of the natural gas transmission network, the City Gas Museum traces the history of this energy that accompanied the development of Paris and its region.

At the site of the old gasworks in Alfortville, the AFEGAZ-COPAGAZ association invites you into its hidden museum to explore the gas story from the early 19th century to today.
You’ll be greeted by a stunning caryatid that lit the entrance to the Gas Pavilion at the 1900 Paris Exposition. As you move through the museum, you’ll relive the birth of gasworks, the first wooden distribution networks, and the rise of this energy source. Initially devoted to street lighting, and later to home appliances, “city gas” helped bring comfort indoors.
You’ll trace the technical evolution through displays of meters, lighting and cooking devices, water heaters and radiators. A wealth of other gas equipment also highlights the rise of many urban crafts and trades.
Films, photos, posters, and scientific and technical works document these technological and social upheavals—and they’re sure to surprise you!
You’ll be guided by former gas workers, some of whom lived through the closing chapters of this era.
