Every five years, the French head to the polls to elect the new President of the Republic. The head of state is chosen by direct universal suffrage in a two-round vote. Emmanuel Macron, the current president of the French Republic, was re-elected to a second term in 2022. Five years on, it’s time to choose a new president.
The government announced on July 1, 2026 the dates for the next presidential election. Save the date for Sunday, April 18 and Sunday, May 2, 2027 to elect the next head of state.
These dates are not chosen at random. The Constitution states that “ The election of the new President takes place at least twenty days and at most thirty-five days before the expiration of the incumbent President's term.” Emmanuel Macron officially began his second term on May 14, 2022. Since this is his second consecutive term, Mr. Macron cannot run in the 2027 election.
In the weeks ahead, the presidential candidates will declare their candidacies publicly, secure the 500 mayoral endorsements, campaign, and roll out their programmes... Until the Friday before polling day, the date on which candidates must stop speaking to respect the “republican silence.”
