Will all eyes be set on Paris Olympics in the summer of 2024? As shared by our peers from Figaro and Cnews, several major cultural 2024 events could be cancelled or even postponed over the Olympics.
This past October 25, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin addressed, during a hearing about the Olympics, the huge security system required for the sports event. According to him, 30,000 police officers per day are required. “The principle is to postpone or cancel major sports or cultural events using too many police officers”, he slipped during the hearing in front of senators, yet adding: “we will not cancel all events”. For the time being, no details have been given on that matter but the issue is raised. Since then, many big summer festival promoters have been wondering and fearing the scenario.
For the record, Paris Summer Olympics are to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024. The Paralympics will take place from August 28 to September 8, 2024. Therefore, some summer 2024 festivals are more threatened than others. We can think of Les Vieilles Charrues and the Interceltic Festival of Lorient in Bretagne or even Rock en Seine in Île-de-France.
What about the other big summer 2024 events in jeopardy? The Tour de France or the Braderie de Lille. To date, nothing is official, Le Figaro stated, but the topic has sparked debates. According to Cnews – that reached the entourage of the Minister of the Interior – there is “no list to date”.
